How can you keep pace with a Ferrari in a family sedan? In an Audi Avant RS6. Dieter Losskarn was blown away.
This is German precision engineering at its best. Precise and accurate. The Heckler & Koch is regarded as one of the best automatic guns in the world. On the other side there is this Russian hooligan, the AK-47. Loud and wild. Both weapons remind me of the one I am currently driving: Audi’s RS6 ballistic family station wagon. In normal mode it is a Heckler & Koch, in sport it turns into a Kalashnikov.
To add to the adrenaline output and because I am an action movie addict, from Tarantino to Transporter, I am taking the not so super sportscar looking super sportscar to Sebastian in Stellenbosch. On the lovely wine farm Rustenberg he is running his business ‘Shootopia’. There, high up in the mountains with stunning views all the way from Table Mountain to False Bay, you can shoot 10 different weapons, that you usually would only encounter in movies. Including the AK-47 and HK MP5, not to forget Clint Eastwood’s famous 500 Smith & Wesson hand cannon.
After the shootout my adrenaline has the right level for the RS6 and Franschhoek pass. The Audi has more firepower than any car in the current Maserati line-up.
More power than an Aston Martin V12 Vantage. More power than a Nissan GT-R.
The 4.0-l. Biturbo V8 is the same V8, that beats in the Bentley Continental GT.
And a a couple of days ago, when I did hot laps in the brand new Porsche 911 Turbo on the new Kyalami track, I thought it will be hard to beat the experience. Now, I am doing just this, in a family wagon. Well, it is a family member. All part of the mighty Volkswagen group.
In the Porsche you expect a super sports car, in this vehicle the acceleration is simply mind-blowing. Absolutely intoxicating and addictive. The V8 sound is beautiful. It rumbles and grumbles and it backfires. Even better with the optional sport exhaust. With this one you will win any robot shoot out. 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds. Before your opponents realize that this is not your regular station wagon, you are gone.
Thanks to Quattro and self locking differential the traction is incredible. It is an Autobahn car and in SA you are always precariously close to the speed limits. Power and pace are effortlessly provided. It is the 3rd generation of the RS6. And those new 21inch wheels look menacing in the flared wheel arches.
And then you have 565 liters of boot space, with the rear seats folded down, this increases to 1680 liters. The optional dynamic package includes ceramic brakes, dynamic steering, matrix beam headlights, sports suspension and allows you to reach 305 km/h.
When I had to give the car back, I felt shaken and stirred.
